The computer technology giant Dell has revealed on Wednesday that its online electronics marketplace was affected by a “cybersecurity incident” earlier this month in which hackers tried to infiltrate its internal network.

It was on November 9th that Dell detected and interrupted unauthorized activity on its network trying to steal customer information which includes their names, email addresses and hashed passwords.

According to Dell, there was no evidence of a successful attempt by the hackers to extract any information. It was not clear how the attackers were able to access the website or what vulnerability was exploited.  But Dell has reset the passwords for all accounts on Dell.com website whether the data had been stolen or not just as a precaution.

Any information regarding how hackers tried to infiltrate the network or how many user accounts were affected were not disclosed by Dell. But they confirmed that payment information and Social Security numbers were not targeted.

Sensitive customer information and Credit card details were not targeted neither did it impact any Dell products or services.

Only those customers are affected who have ever created an account on the Dell website to purchase any of their products or to access the online support.

If you are a Dell customer and signed up on the website Dell.com think that you are also affected by the breach and change your password at the earliest. Besides, as a security measure, check your credit card transactions and inform bank if you find any suspicious activity.
